Greeley woman presumed missing in Langtang

COLORADO May 11 :
A 23-year-old from Greeley is presumed to be missing in Nepal, as local and international authorities mount a search in the remote Langtang region.

Aubrey Sacco has not been heard from since April 20 as she set out on a week-long hike through the Himilayas, north of Kathmandu and bordering Tibet, her father, Paul Sacco, said.

US Sen. Mark Udall of Colorado has issued a directive urging the U.S. Embassy in Nepal to begin an investigation, Sacco said.

"Our plan is to bring to bear all the local pressure we can to find her," he said. "The embassy, the Nepal government and tourism board, local police, as well as local Sherpas have volunteered to help try to find her."His daughter, who graduated from the University of Colorado with degrees in psychology and art last year, is a "very experienced" world traveler, but never goes more than a couple of days without touching base, he said.

"That's the paradox," he said. "She may be in a place where she can't communicate with the outside. It's a very remote area."

She began the trek at Syabrubesi and planned to follow the Lonely Planet hiking guide through the Langtang National Park.

She is scheduled to return to the United States on Saturday, he said. She has been traveling alone in South Asia for five months to teach yoga, English and art.

Paul Sacco said many Coloradoans hike in the region and might have seen her or know someone traveling there who can help search.

He said he is hopeful she is just overdue and has been unable to communicate by phone or e-mail.

"She's a courageous little girl," he said "She's fearless and she's very strong. My gut tells me she's fine, but we haven't heard from her and we're very worried."

He said when his daughter returned she would have a lot of thank-you notes to write to those concerned for her and those who have helped search.

"And I'm going to stand over her shoulder and make sure she writes every one of them," he said.
