Dhaulagiri's golden jubilee
KATHMANDU, MAY 11 :
In a bid to boost mountaineering tourism and highlight the country's scenic attractions in the build-up to Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the government and other tourism stakeholders are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Dhaulagiri on May 13.
The celebration will be held in Pokhara on May 13 and in Beni and Baglung on May 14, the organizer Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) said Tuesday.
On May 13, 1960, Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, Albin Schelbert, Nyima Dorji and Nawang Dorji of a Swiss and Austrian expedition, first climbed Mt. Dhaulagiri. Kurt Diemberger, the only living summitter, was applauded for his historic achievement.
"Mountaineering tourism plays an important role in transforming the mountain people's lives, and such events will help boost mountaineering activities in a sustainable manner," said NMA president Ang Tshering Sherpa. NMA has organized golden jubilee celebrations of the first ascents of Everest, Cho-Oyu, Makalu, Kanchanjunga, Lhotse and Manaslu.
"We have planned to bring together and felicitate Dhaulagiri summitters on this occasion," the NMA said. The government has announced that the 50th anniversary of the first ascents of all the 8,000-m peaks would be commemorated in an effort to gain international publicity for NTY 2011.
