Winter trekking can be difficult because of the bitterly low temperatures and the possibility of snow-blocked pathways. But, if you are well-prepared with the right accessories and clothing, then these off-peak seasons might also offer you a unique experience. Trekking in difficult seasons has its advantages, like the fact that you will find fewer trekkers on the trails, which will give you a more serene and solitary adventure.

b) Elevation and distance
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a stunning adventure through the magical Annapurna region that is combined with a cultural tour of Kathmandu and Pokhara. Moving forward to the journey, you will embark on a scenic seven-hour drive to Pokhara, which is situated at 830 meters (2,723 feet) and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan foothills along the way.
We will take a car from Pokhara to Nayapul on the fourth day, where your hike will begin. The hiking begins at Tikhe Dhunga, which is located at 1,570 meters (5,150 feet). The one-hour trek takes you through lush forests and charming villages, then we will continue our trek from Tikhe Dhunga to Ghorepani, which stands at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet).
The sixth day of the journey is its high point, when you hike early in the morning from Ghorepani to Poon Hill (3210 meters) to see the breathtaking sunrise across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges.
You will be spending some of your time enjoying the scenic views, and then we will continue our trek to Tadapani at 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), which will take around seven hours, though it also depends on your walking speed; some of the trekkers complete it in around six hours as well.
On the same day, we will descend from Tadapani to Ghandruk, a Gurung village at 1,940 meters (6,364 feet). It will take roughly three hours to do the shortest stroll. This trip will be a great trekking experience because you will have enough time to unwind and enjoy the cultural diversity and stunning beauty of the Annapurna region.
c) Difficulty and altitude sickness
Any trek’s degree of difficulty, including the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, is greatly influenced by altitude. At 3,210 meters (10531.5 feet), Poon Hill is the highest point of the 10-day walk. This elevation is reasonable when compared to other Himalayan climbs in Nepal, including Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp.

Trekkers should be well aware of this potential risk, which is altitude sickness, commonly known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), despite the area’s moderate height. Some of the possible symptoms are headaches and exhaustion. While the risk is notably lower than on hikes to higher altitudes, so you do not need to worry that much because our 10-day trek plan includes gradual climbing and time to get used to the altitude, which will help your body adjust.
The terrain on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is varied, with paths going through forests, fields, and villages. The trails are well-maintained with stone steps and clear signage, which makes it easier to find your way. However, some parts, like the steep climbs to Ulleri and the hike up to Poon Hill, can be tough, but good shoes and careful waking and staying alert are crucial for these sections.
d) Maximum and minimum walk per day
On this Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek of 10 days, you’ll have to walk roughly 5 to 6 hours on average. You’ll start and end your trekking journey in Nayapul. You’ll walk a minimum of 3 hours per day during the trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk.
Similarly, you need to walk for a maximum of 7-8 hours per day when trekking to Tadapani from Ghorepani village, including a morning hike to Poon Hill. This is a moderate-level trek. So, you need to fit and properly hydrate during trekking to avoid altitude sickness and weariness.
e) Accommodation, Food and Drink
During this 10-day Ghorepani Poon Hill trek, we’ll be covering all your accommodation and food expenses. You’ll get to stay in standard hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu only. During trekking, there will be twin-sharing accommodations in lodges. You will get good facilities for electricity, gadget charging, internet, hot showers, and others in some lodges.
However, you need to pay for these facilities in some places. Also, these facilities will be limited upon ascending higher elevations. We include breakfast, lunch, and dinner based on the lodge menu. Most of the lodges serve Dal Bhat, eggs, noodles, soup, Momos, and bread, including non-alcoholic drinks.
f) Permit
You must acquire two important documents: a Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), before starting this Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. ACAP will cost NPR 3000 per person for foreigners and NPR 1000 for SAARC citizens.
Likewise, the TIMS card will cost around NPR 2000 per person for foreigners and NPR 300 for SAARC nationals. You need to submit passport-sized photos, visa copies, and a photocopy of your passport to obtain this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
g) Transportation
On the first day upon your arrival in Kathmandu city, we’ll transport you to your hotel via our private vehicle. Then, next, we’ll tour the Kathmandu Valley by our private vehicle in the major places. On the third day, we’ll drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu via a comfortable tourist bus.
If you wish to fly to Pokhara, then it will cost you an additional charge. We’ll drive by car to Nayapul from Pokhara and to Pokhara from Nayapul during our return. On the last day, we’ll be driving back to Kathmandu city via tourist bus from Pokhara.
h) Insurance
We recommend you have travel insurance for this Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. It protects you from unforeseen challenges at high altitudes, such as medical emergencies and costly evacuations. Insurance packages typically cost around USD 150 per month or more, so make sure your plan includes adequate coverage for trekking in Nepal.
