Altitude sickness is one of the most important factors to consider when trekking in Nepal. The higher you are, the lower the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere and this can influence the way your body functions and adapts. The symptoms and proper precautions can be understood and ensure a safe and pleasant journey with Multi Adventure.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or altitude sickness is a condition that arises when the body fails to adapt to the elevated altitude. It is not limited to any age or fitness level, and it particularly occurs in situations where one is climbing too fast without proper acclimatization.
It is usually seen at altitudes over 2,500 to 3,000 meters and this is the reason why most trekking trails in Nepal need proper planning and slow climbing.
The initial symptoms of altitude sickness may be headache, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and insomnia. These symptoms might seem like mild cases of dehydration or exhaustion, but they cannot be disregarded.
In more severe cases, the symptoms may become worse and may involve severe headache, vomiting, confusion, and difficulty breathing. In case of severe symptoms, one must be provided with immediate attention.
The most effective method of avoiding altitude sickness is to go up step by step and give your body time to adapt. Most trekking itineraries contain proper acclimatization days to assist in mitigating the risk.
It is also important to remain well hydrated, eat at regular intervals, avoid alcohol and maintain a moderate pace. It can help a lot to listen to your body and report any discomfort in time.
As soon as the signs of altitude sickness manifest themselves, one should not proceed with the ascent. One of the best solutions is usually to rest on the same level or at a lower altitude.
Our guides are trained to indicate the signs of altitude sickness and will act accordingly to make sure that you are safe. In severe cases, emergency evacuation or helicopter rescue can be organized in case of necessity.
At Multi Adventure, we take your safety as our first priority. We have well planned itineraries with adequate acclimatization and our guides are seasoned and keep track of your progress during the trek.
We promote open communication where any symptoms can be discussed in time. Most trekkers can enjoy safe high-altitude visits in the Himalayas with the proper preparation and encouragement.
